Calling all hikers, bikers, horseback riders, and off-roaders! National Trails Day, established by the American Hiking Society in 1993, occurs annually on the first Saturday in June. Celebrate the endless miles of trails that offer spaces for adventure, reflection, and connection with nature by hitting a trail near you!
From rugged mountain paths to peaceful forest walks, adventures await on your public lands
Did you know the Forest Service manages the largest public trail system in the United States with over 165,000 miles (265,542 km) of multi-use trails? This National Trails Day, the Forest Service is offering a fee-free day to celebrate the adventures and memories made on National Forest System trails, as well as the staff and volunteers that work year-round to maintain these trails.
While we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary this year, why not volunteer and pay it forward for the next 250 years? Join a local National Trails Day event on Saturday, June 6 to promote trail stewardship and leave the trails better than we found them. From trail cleanups, invasive species removal, and trail construction to guided hikes, nature walks, scavenger hunts, and more, there’s something for everyone!

When you hear National Trails Day, you might think of hiking, but there’s so much more to explore! National Trails Day also honors and celebrates interpretive nature trails, biking, horseback riding, snowshoeing, and motorized trail use, such as ATVs, OHVs, and snowmobiles.
